Artist Profile: Janice P. Smith

Study of light and shadow by Janice P. Smith

Janice P. Smith is a painter from Sierra Vista, Arizona. She received a Friends of Western Art scholarship to attend the Ray Roberts Portrait Workshop.

During the Workshop, Roberts did several demonstrations. Smith recalls, "The main teaching object was to capture what was in light and what was in shadow. Where you see two head studies, that denotes shorter time to work. The larger works indicate more time spent trying to capture a likeness and correct values."

The Friends of Western Art and the Tucson Pima Arts Council are partnering to provide a Western Art scholarship in the amount of $2,000 to high school seniors as part of the Arts Council's spring Pima County Youth Arts Awards.

Each scholarship will be granted over a two-year period. The award is for studies in painting, drawing, and/or sculpture.  Students applying for the scholarship are required to follow the stated Youth Award guidelines available at TucsonPimaArtsCouncil.org.

Interested students must submit an application along with two reference letters and ten visual representations of their work illustrating or depicting Western life, cultural practices and a sense of place reflective of the Southwest.  Suggested subject matter includes but is not limited to portraiture, landscape, ranch life, wildlife and domesticated animals, traditional cultural representations, and architectural themes.

Applicants are also required to submit a written personal statement that reflects a commitment to Western Art.  Lastly, the selected student will submit photographs of artwork completed during the scholarship and a short written reflection focused on their learning as year-end feedback for the Friends of Western Art.

The inaugural winner of this scholarship is Marana High School senior Samuel Guiterrez-Solis. His grant award is for $2,000 and will be administered through Pima College over a two-year period. Samuel is shown here with our own Michael Murphy and Leia Maahs, Tucson Pima Arts Council Community Arts Development Coordinator.
